New Digs?

Holy Crap!  It's 27 degrees out!

I'm toying with the idea of looking for a new apartment when August rolls around.  I'm pretty content with where I am right now but I'd love to find a place that:

a) Doesn't have carpet.
b) Has a balcony.

This could change several times over in my mind as moving is a big ordeal.  Ideally, I'd also like to move somewhere very close to where I am.  Ah, decisions.  For the time being, I put myself on the waiting list for a place that's pretty close to where I am right now, I just have no idea what the price range is.

As you may be aware (or may not), I recently started two separate blogs from this one.  One of which is a reading blog where I can post my reviews from GoodReads as well as some other book related things.  I haven't decided exactly what those other things are.  That being said, I have started a sort of hard-boiled/noir project where I'm going to read 20 famous or influential noir books.  I thought - why not?  I'm already interested in the genre.. maybe I can do something fun with this.

The other blog is a pro-wrestling blog.  I've wanted to have a Tumblr blog for a while but wanted something pretty specific.  Since it seems to be filled with wrestling fans, I thought I'd give it a shot.  Having a lot of fun with it seeing as there's several entertaining people on there with some funny photos and gifs.

My Recent Obsession

After reading consistently for the better part of 5 years, I've finally found my niche when it comes to a particular genre.

Noir & Crime Fiction.

That shouldn't really be all that much of a surprise, really.  Not only is the genre one of the most popular categories in the world, I've talked endlessly about John Connolly and his signature character Charlie Parker. With Connolly being my gateway drug and by joining good reads, I've discovered Lawrence Block, Richard Stark and many other one-off books exploring society's seedy under-belly.

It's not just the memorable characters that draw me in, it's the language; the prose.  The writing within this genre is usually pretty slick - complete with catchy quotes and fantastic one liners.  Oh, and don't forget the overall dark tone of the genre.  In fact, one of the more recent books I've read, Grifter's Game, has one of the darkest endings I've experienced.  I've started digesting everything I can get my hands on and began collecting books again with the Hardcase Crime Series.  I've still been downloading books at a rapid pace but it's nice to know that affordable books still exist that at times come in below e-reader pricing.

Living within walking distance of a respectable library is also helping as it's given me a chance to check out some crime and noir influenced graphic novels like Ed Brubaker's Incognito and Criminal series'.

Above all else, it's influenced me in a sense that maybe I could write something?  I'm looking forward to Camp NaNoWriMo in June - I'm going to seriously give this a shot.  If I fail?  Hey, at least I gave it a shot.  Can't wait!

Toronto Sports Radio

I can't listen to the Fan 590 or TSN Sports Radio 1050 any longer.

I haven't in my LIFE been exposed to journalism that is so negative and depressing.  Obviously the Toronto Maple Leafs are a hard team to be a fan of, I get that, but who wants to listen to their team get run down day-in and day-out.

Within the span of my 8 hour work day, I have either one of these stations on in the background.  There's no variety or difference in the two, they're both filled with commentators that verbally destroy this team every day. While I do agree with the Toronto sports media in the fact that Brian Burke and Ron Wilson should have known what they were getting into when they agreed to work for this franchise, Burke was right in saying that it's "hell" on the players when you're a member of this team.

I understand that the Leafs haven't made the playoffs since 2004 and I know it's frustrating on the fans but this team is not the same team in 2004, 2005, 2006 or 2007 - Burkie and Wilson didn't even come on until 2008.

It's really been trying my patience as a fan because I'm starting to dislike other Leafs fans and anyone who says they can "fix the team".  Being a supporter of this franchise for nearly 20 years, this is the first time I'm starting to get sick of the organization.
